Indications we intend to treat with proton therapy
Wherever possible proton therapy patients are treated without the use of anaesthetics. The need for anaesthesia for some paediatric proton therapy patients is based on factors such as age, ability to lie still (with play therapy) or not, rather than diagnosis as such. Usually only very young children need anaesthetics.
A full list of current proton therapy indications for treatment at the Rutherford Cancer Centre South Wales can be obtained from the MDT Coordinator (contact details below).
In order to secure treatment at the Rutherford Cancer Centres:
- Patients should always seek referral through their consultant or oncologist.
- Consultant or oncologist referrals should be made through the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) coordinator.
- The MDT Coordinator is available by phone or email to help with all queries regarding a referral.
- On receipt the referral will be prepared for assessment by the MDT and forwarded to the named Rutherford Cancer Centre consultant for treatment if accepted.
- The MDT Coordinator can be contacted via email at MDTsouthwales@therutherford.com or by telephone on 01633 740 005.
Patients will be subject to normal MDT assessments before referral to the Rutherford Cancer Centres and their treatment decided. However, in the case of proton therapy referrals, the Rutherford Cancer Centres operate a proton therapy MDT in each centre to provide extra assurance that proton therapy is the most appropriate treatment. The proton therapy MDT will provide weekly reviews of treatments and referrals.
For each referral into our various services, Clinical Pathways are produced and give referring consultants the means and confidence to enable patients to be referred to the Rutherford Cancer Centres and show how support and acute services with other providers will be accessed if required.
Below you will see a snapshot of a typical patient pathway, for a specific full version please contact the MDT Coordinator.
